Big Sur Road Closure

On Saturday March 30th a slide on Hwy 1 closed traffic near Rocky Creek between Big Sur and Carmel. Big Sur is currently unreachable with another slide having closed the road to the south for the last 18 months. We are incredibly grateful to Big Sur Fire, CHP, Caltrans and our amazing staff that took care of our guests and residents over Easter weekend. The Big Sur community understands the concept of a “coordinated effort.” We await news from Caltrans regarding their assessment of the highway and an opening date. We are keeping a positive mindset and still planning for an epic 90th anniversary this spring and summer.

Here is a little of what we have been up to:

Though the highway was closed and convoys had not yet begun, River Inn rolled with the punches and made the decision to host our annual Easter Egg Hunt. It was a sunny and fun moment for everyone waiting for the convoys to open. Chef and his team had prepared delicious Easter dishes for all of our reservations that had to be canceled. But our homesteader spirit prevailed and we did not let the food go to waste. We donated to the Big Sur Big Share. The Big Sur Big Share started in 2020, working with local businesses and the Monterey County food bank to share food and support for the community. This week folks went home with all the delicious Easter specials from our kitchen. To help make sure our neighbors and essential workers can get a hot meal and a cold beer, we have our General Store and Restaurant open for limited hours.

In past disasters many people have asked how they can support us from afar. In a happy turn of events we launched our new site and online shop on April 1st. Until we can be together again, shop our new online store and you too can get a little “River Inn” sent right to your doorstep.

Small family owned businesses like ours truly appreciate the community, guests and our staff that make the River Inn what it is today… and hopefully tomorrow too.
